Markets Slipped Into Red- March 17, 2009

The markets slipped into red as selling pressure witnessed among the selective scrips. The benchmark indices erased their gains after breaching the 9,000 and 2,800 level. Further the negative opening of the European markets also turned down the sentiments today. The Banking, Oil & Gas, IT and Realty stocks are leading the losing streak. The broader markets continued to outperform the benchmarks but were off highs.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 8,850 mark and the NSE Nifty is trading around the 2,750 mark.

The overall market breadth is positive as 1202 stocks are advancing while 1131 stocks are declining in BSE.

Maruti Suzuki reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading up by (1.55%) at Rs. 709.70.

However, TCS reported the top loser down by (3.62%) at Rs. 501.

At 2.35PM BSE Sensex is at 8,863.31 down by 80.23 points and Nifty is at 2,756.50 down by 20.75 points.

The BSE Mid Cap is lower by 1.42 points at 2,699.14 while the BSE Small Cap increased by 13.35 points to 3,011.84.

The IT index is trading lower by 38.55 points or 1.75% at 2,160.62. Losers from this pack are TCS trading down by 3.62% at Rs501 along with Oracle Finance by 2.58% at Rs662, Wipro by 2.17% at Rs223.30, Finance Technologies by 1.84% at Rs491, Infosys by 1.79% at Rs1265.20 and Aptech by 0.61% at Rs72.80.

The Bankex index is trading with deep cut of 91.46 points or 2.24% at 3,995.93. Scrips from the losers pack are Axis bank trading lower by 5.57% at Rs323.60 followed by Bank of Baroda by 4.92% at Rs196.25, Oriental bank by 3.79% at Rs99, PNB by 3.64% at Rs329.90, BOI by 3.58% at Rs192.30, SBI by 3.46% at Rs953.60, IOB by 3.31% at Rs42.30, IDBI Bank by 2.96% at Rs44.25 and HDFC bank by 2.68% at Rs822.

The most active shares on NSE are Unitech trading at Rs.26.30 with a total traded quantity of 49176126 shares followed by Rolta trading at Rs.51.90 with a total traded quantity of 28636421 shares.

Praj Industries Ltd is trading lower by 1.12% at Rs48.50. The company has received an order for downstream processing equipment from Range Fuels, USA, of approx. Rs 20 crores.

LIC Housing Finance Ltd (LICHFL) is trading down by 3.10% at Rs200.35. The company cut its home loan rates by 0.75 per cent for the existing customers with effect from from April 1. The borrowers can now avail loans for a rate of 10- 10.5 per cent as against 10.75-11.25 per cent earlier. The company in January had reduced its lending rates by 0.75 per cent for the existing customers. LICHFL had cut its lending rates by 1.25 per cent in three tranches during last year.

On the global markets front, the European markets are trading lower as FTSE 100 and DAX index are trading down by (1.05%) and (1.24%) respectively.

Markets Opened Lower In Line With Asian Peers- March 9, 2009

The markets today opened lower on the back of mixed cues from the global markets. The Asian markets are also trading lower. All the sectorial indices are trading in red in the early trade. The selling pressure witnessed among the IT, Oil & Gas, Consumer Durables and Power stocks. The BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap index are also trading lower in the early trade.

The Asian markets are trading lower today as Nikkei 255, Shanghai Composite, Hang Seng and Straits Times index are trading lower by (0.81%), (1.04%), (1.76%) and (1.95%) respectively. However, Seoul Composite index is trading marginally higher by (0.23%).

The US stock markets on Friday ended in mixed after a sharp volatile session, as weak economic data weighed over the sentiments. Further the financial sector remained in pressure that sent the S&P 500 and the Dow past prior session lows to their worst intraday levels since 1996. The nonfarm payrolls in February fell 651,000, in-line with expectations and the unemployment climbed more than expected to a 25-year high of 8.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) advanced by 32.50 points to close at 6,626.94. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 5.74 points to close at 1,293.85 and the S&P 500 (SPX) grew by 0.83 points to close at 683.38.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 8,250 mark and the NSE Nifty trading below the 2,600 mark.

HDFC reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (2.51%) at Rs. 1,254 while HUL reported the top loser down by (2.61%) at Rs. 218.10.

The overall market breadth is negative as 458 stocks are advancing while 700 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.33AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 96.90 points at 8,228.92 and the Nifty was down by 32.55 points to 2,587.60.

The BSE Mid Cap decreased by 14.61 points to 2,571.69 and the BSE Small Cap fell by 14.99 points to 2,896.74.

BSE Oil & Gas index is trading lower by 82.80 points or (1.45%) to trade at 5,641.26. The top losers are BPCL decreased by (2.11%) to Rs.370.30, HPCL down by (2.04%) to Rs.267, RNRL declined by (1.91%) to Rs.35.95 followed by Indian Oil fell by (1.26%) to Rs. 427.

BSE IT index is trading lower by 27.77 points or (1.34%) to trade at 2,044.55. The major losers are Rolta Ind declined by (7.79%) to Rs. 44.95, Patni Computer down by (2.24%) to Rs.107, TCS decreased by (1.52%) to Rs.473.50 followed by Tech Mahindra down by (1.52%) to Rs.249.90.

Power Grid is trading lower by (0.97%) at Rs. 91.65. The company is planning to invest Rs 1,200 crore over the next three years in its telecom business. The company is in talks with a couple of television channels for providing its network for video streaming facilities.

Markets Opened Significantly Higher- Feb 25, 2009

The markets today opened sharply higher on the back of positive cues from the global markets. All the sectorial indices are trading in red in the opening trade. However there is a little bit of volatility ahead of F&O expiry of February series on Thursday. The Metal and Capital Goods stocks are the front-runners in the early trade. Further significant buying is also seen among the Auto, Banking IT and Power stocks. The broader markets today are also facing the buying momentum, as both the BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap index are trading with a gain of more than 1% each.

The government yesterday after the market hours has announced a third stimulus package in order to boost the slowing economy. The acting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Mukherjee announced several relief measures in terms of excise duty cuts and reduction in service tax in an attempt to help industry, reeling under the pressure of the economic slowdown. The government has announced a cut in the excise duty and service tax by 2% each and extended a 4% reduction in excise duty, provided in the first stimulus package, beyond March 31. The duty on bulk cement has been reduced from 10% to 8% or Rs 230/t whichever is higher.

The Asian markets are trading higher today on the back of overnight gains in the US markets. The Nikkei 225, Hang Seng and Straits Times index are trading up by (0.80%), (0.50%) and (0.5%) respectively. However, Shanghai Composite index is trading lower by (0.80%).

The US markets on Tuesday after Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke calmed the increasing fears of bank nationalization plan by the Obama administration. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) surged by 236.16 points to close at 7,350.94. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index increased by 54.11 points to close at 1,441.83 and the S&P 500 (SPX) grew by 29.81 points to close at 773.14.

The BSE Sensex is now trading above the 8,900 mark and the NSE Nifty trading above the 2,750 mark.

Mahindra & Mahindra reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (4.52%) at Rs. 308.45, while ITC reported the top loser down by (0.53%) at Rs. 179.80.

The overall market breadth is positive as 980 stocks are advancing while 411 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.34AM, the BSE Sensex was up by 121.05 points at 8,943.11 and the Nifty was up by 36.75 points to 2,770.65.

The BSE Mid Cap increased by 39.15 points to 2,781.60 and the BSE Small Cap grew by 37.19 points to 3,153.30.

BSE Metal index is trading higher by 101.98 points or (2.22%) to trade at 4,686.05. The top gainers are JSW Steel increased by (3.53%) to Rs.190.75, NALCO up by (3.46%) to Rs.205, Hindalco Industries inclined by (3.20%) to Rs.40.35 followed by SAIL grew by (3.16%) to Rs. 78.45.

BSE Capital Goods index is trading higher by 118.07 points or (1.99%) to trade at 6,042.34. The major gainers are L&T inclined by (2.05%) to Rs. 638.30, Praj Industries up by (2.04%) to Rs.52.50, Punj Lloyd increased by (1.96%) to Rs.85.80 followed by BEML grew by (1.80%) to Rs.361.95.

L&T is trading higher by (2.33%) at Rs. 640. The company has bagged three new orders worth Rs 1,438 crore. The orders include Rs. 1,130 crore from Gulf region and a Rs 308 crore, order from the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company.

Markets Opened Lower- Feb 20, 2009

The markets today opened sharply lower tracking weak cues from the global markets. All the sectorial indices are trading in red in the opening trade. The Asian markets are also trading weak tracking overnight losses in the US markets. The heavy sell off is seen among the Realty, Banking, IT, Metal and Capital Goods stocks. The broader markets today are also witnessing some selling pressure in the early trade.

The Asian markets are trading mostly lower barring the Shanghai Composite index, which is trading higher by (0.58%). However, the Nikkei 225, Hang Seng, Seoul Composite and Straits Times index are trading lower by (1.94%), (2.45%), (3.85%) and (1.75%) respectively.

The US markets on Thursday tumbled, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average touching a six-year low due to concerns about rising credit-card defaults and worries over how Obama administration will solve the increasing financial crisis. Further, the cut down in the profit forecast by tech giant Hewlett-Packard also added to the negative sentiments of the markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped by 89.68 points to close at 7,465.95. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 25.15 points to close at 1,442.82 and the S&P 500 (SPX) fell by 9.48 points to close at 778.94.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 8,900 mark and the NSE Nifty trading below the 2,750 mark.

There are no gains among the BSE Sensex pack in the opening trade. DLF reported the top loser from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading loser by (4.92%) at Rs. 148.65 followed by ICICI Bank the top loser down by (4.14%) at Rs. 346.55.

The overall market breadth is negative as 287 stocks are advancing while 907 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.30AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 194.35 points at 8,848.28 and the Nifty was down by 60.25 points to 2,729.10.

The BSE Mid Cap decreased by 36.69 points to 2,801.71 and the BSE Small Cap fell by 37.22 points to 3,176.88.

BSE Realty index is trading lower by 47.76 points or (3.22%) to trade at 1,434.57. The top losers are DLF decreased by (4.57%) to Rs.149.20, Mahindra Life down by (4.14%) to Rs.104.25, India Bull Real declined by (3.55%) to Rs.93.60 followed by Orbit Co. fell by (3.26%) to Rs. 43.

BSE Banking index is trading lower by 130.50 points or (2.93%) to trade at 4,324.08. The major losers are ICICI Bank declined by (3.98%) to Rs. 347.10, Bank of India down by (3.72%) to Rs.218.55, Kotak Bank decreased by (3.49%) to Rs.243.70 followed by HDFC Bank fell by (3.30%) to Rs.855.60.

Satyam Computer is trading higher by (3.68%) at Rs. 47.95 after the after the Company Law Board (CLB) on Thursday allowed Satyam Computer to sell a stake to a strategic investor through an open competitive bidding process. There are reports that the company is likely to sell 26% stake to strategic partner.

Markets Opened On A Positive Note- Feb 19, 2009

The markets today opened on a positive note amid mixed cues from the global markets. The US markets ended on a flat note and the Asian markets are however trading mixed. Further the investors keep an eye over the inflation data, which is scheduled to announce latter in the day. The Realty, Banking, Metal, Capital Goods, Auto and Power stocks are trading with decent gains. However, the FMCG index is lagging in the opening trade. The broader markets today are also witnessing some buying momentum in the early trade.

The Asian markets are trading mixed today due to the continued concern about the deepening recession worries in the United States and Japan. The Shanghai Composite, Nikkei 225 and Seoul Composite index are trading higher by (0.70%%), (0.83%) and (0.14%) respectively. However, the Hang Seng and Strait Times index are trading lower by (0.41%) and (0.91%) respectively.

The US markets on Wednesday, after trading sideways for most of the session, finally ended flat on the back of a government plan to stem foreclosures and a restructuring plan from General Motors. However the economic data remains bleak today. The fed cut the 2009 outlook of the economy. It expects the economy to shrink and unemployment to rise. The economy will contract between 0.5% and 1.3% and the unemployment rate is projected to rise between 8.5% and 8.8%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) advanced marginally by 3.03 points to close at 7,555.63. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 2.69 points to close at 1,467.97 and the S&P 500 (SPX) fell by 0.75 points to close at 788.42.

The BSE Sensex is now trading around the 9,100 mark and the NSE Nifty trading near the 2,800 mark.

Mahindra & Mahindra reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (5.29%) at Rs. 299.60 while HUL the top loser down by (1.18%) at Rs. 250.75.

The overall market breadth is positive as 793 stocks are advancing while 372 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.30AM, the BSE Sensex was up by 61.72 points at 9,076.91 and the Nifty was up by 18 points to 2,794.15.

The BSE Mid Cap increased by 21.97 points to 2,866.28 and the BSE Small Cap grew by 17.33 points to 3,243.39.

BSE Realty index is trading higher by 29.95 points or (2.01%) to trade at 1,521.61. The top gainers are Orbitco increased by (4.06%) to Rs.46.15, HDIL up by (3.22%) to Rs.81.75, India Bull Real inclined by (2.22%) to Rs.98.80 followed by Omaxe Ltd. grew by (1.92%) to Rs. 45.15.

BSE Banking index is trading higher by 79.44 points or (1.77%) to trade at 4,558.93. The major gainers are PNB inclined by (2.35%) to Rs. 373.10, Bank of India up by (2.01%) to Rs.225.70, ICICI Bank increased by (1.99%) to Rs.376.70 followed by HDFC Bank grew by (1.63%) to Rs.890.90.

JSW Steel is trading higher by (2.73%) at Rs. 214.35. The company has surpassed Tata Steel to become the country''s largest private sector steel producer, with an installed capacity of 7.8 million tonnes.

Markets Turned Choppy After A Negative Start - Feb 18, 2009

The markets today open lower on the back of negative cues from the global markets. But suddenly the markets gained grounds and turned choppy as some buying momentum witnessed among the selective scrips. The Oil & Gas, Pharma, and IT stocks are witnessing some buying momentum in the early trade. However, the Consumer Durables, Banking and Realty stocks are still facing the selling pressure. The broader markets are also trading marginally lower in the early trade.

The Asian markets are trading lower on the back of deepening economic gloominess and fears about the global finance sector have prompted investors to remain in the sidelines. The Shanghai Composite, Hang Seng, Nikkei 225, Seoul Composite and Straits Times index are trading lower by (2.73%), (1.56%), (1.81%), (1.54%) and (0.08%) respectively.

The US markets on Tuesday plunged on the back of renewed financial and economic concerns spurred an unrelenting selling effort. The automakers shares remained in pressure as they signal that they would require additional funds to wave over the crisis. Both the General Motors Corp and Chrysler LLC have requested nearly $22 billion in combined additional US government aid on Tuesday. New York Federal Reserve reported its empire State Manufacturing Index which fell to a record negative-34.6 in February from negative-22.2 in January. US President Barack Obama signed the $787 billion economic stimulus bill into law on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped by 297.81 points to close at 7,552.60. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 63.70 points to close at 1,470.66 and the S&P 500 (SPX) fell by 37.67 points to close at 789.17.

The BSE Sensex is now trading around the 9,050 mark and the NSE Nifty trading above the 2,770 mark.

Reliance Industries reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (1.85%) at Rs. 1,291 while HDFC the top loser down by (2.06%) at Rs. 1,403.

The overall market breadth is negative as 616 stocks are advancing while 637 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.30AM, the BSE Sensex was up by 17.79 points at 9,052.79 and the Nifty was up by 14.10 points to 2,784.60.

The BSE Mid Cap decreased by 0.08 points to 2,857.03 and the BSE Small Cap fell by 1.99 points to 3,244.

BSE Oil & Gas index is trading higher by 75.22 points or (1.24%) to trade at 6,153.18. The top gainers are Reliance Industries increased by (1.92%) to Rs.1,292, HPCL down by (1.66%) to Rs.294, BPCL declined by (1.28%) to Rs.400.05 followed by RPL fell by (1.22%) to Rs. 82.90.

BSE IT index is trading higher by 11.62 points or (0.57%) to trade at 2,059.24. The major gainers are HCL Technologies inclined by (1.01%) to Rs. 110.20, Infosys Technologies up by (0.70%) to Rs.1,185.90, TCS decreased by (0.42%) to Rs.487.95 followed by Wipro grew by (0.38%) to Rs.210.50.

Markets Are Trading Near Day’s Low - Feb 17, 2009

The markets are now trading at day’s low as selling pressure intensified. Further the negative opening of the European markets also added to the sentiments today. Moreover the cues from Asian markets are not that encouraging. All the sectorial indices are trading in red. The Realty and Banking stocks are out of favor today and got hammered badly after the much-awaited interim budget fails to provide any economic stimulus package to beaten down sectors. The Consumer Durables, Metal, IT and Oil & Gas stocks are also on the seller’s ride today. The BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap indices are also trading lower with a cut of more than 2% each.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 9,050 mark and the NSE Nifty is trading below the 2,800 mark.

The overall market breadth is negative as 557 stocks are advancing while 1697 stocks are declining in BSE.

ITC reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack. It is trading higher by (0.39%) at Rs.181.10 while ICICI Bank the top loser down by (6.67%) at Rs. 381.90.

At 2.30PM BSE Sensex is at 9,033.28 down by 272.17 points and Nifty is at 2,768.15 down by 80.35 points.

The BSE Mid Cap is lower by 64.35 points at 2,860.40 and the BSE Small Cap decreased by 73.23 points to 3,250.91.

The BSE Bankex index is trading with losses of 223.38 points at 4,571.40. Losers from this pack are ICICI Bank trading down by 6.51% at Rs382.55 along with Oriental Bank by 5.75% at Rs118, Axis bank by 4.96% at Rs398, Bank Of India by 4.56% at Rs227.20, HDFC bank by 4.36% at Rs874.85, Bank Of Baroda by 3.88% at Rs227.70, Indus Ind bank by 3.74% at Rs32.15, IOB by 3.51% at Rs56.35, State Bank Of India by 3.30% at Rs1098.50, IDBI Bank by 2.27% at Rs51.70 and Canara Bank by 1.92% at Rs183.50.

The Metal index is trading with deep cut of 203.39 points at 4,827.63. Scrips from the losers pack are Tata Steel trading down by 5.87% at Rs173.25 followed by Hindalco Industries by 5.08% at Rs42.05, Gujarat NRE Coke by 4.99% at Rs21.90, Sesa Goa by 4.57% at Rs86.65, Jindal Steel by 4.40% at Rs970.10, SAIL by 4.33% at Rs82.85, Sterlite Industries by 3.37% at Rs253.70, Ispat Industries by 3.36% at Rs10.63, Welspun Gujarat by 3.31% at Rs68.65.

The most active shares on NSE are Unitech trading at Rs.28.65 with a total traded quantity of 32602814 shares followed by Satyam Computers trading at Rs.50.75 with a total traded quantity of 28561002 shares.

On the global markets front, the European markets are trading lower as FTSE and DAX index are trading lower by (0.94%) and (1.69%) respectively.

Oracle Financial Services Software is trading lower by 1.32% at Rs666.60. The company today announced Oracle Flexcube Direct banking 5.0, an internet and mobile banking application that addresses the direct banking needs of financial institutions ranging from traditional brick and mortar and click and mortar institutions to direct business entities of the banks.

Markets Continue Its Yesterday''s Downfall- Feb 17, 2009

The markets continued its yesterday’s downfall and open sharply lower today in line with the Asian markets. The traders are disappointed as the much-awaited interim budget fails to provide any sops to the required sectors.

The markets yesterday plunged with the realty, banking and the auto stocks gave up their early gains as the interim budget failed to provide any relief as expected. All the sectorial indices are trading in red in the opening trade mainly led by the Realty, Banking, Metal, Consumer Durables, Power and Auto stocks. The broader markets are also trading marginally lower with a cut of more than 1% in the early trade.

The Asian markets are trading lower with the Shanghai Composite. Hang Seng, Nikkei 225, Seoul Composite and Straits Times index are trading lower by (0.52%), (2.95%), (1.55%), (3.25%) and (1.14%) respectively. The Shanghai Composite index also gave up its winning rally due to lack of new stimulus measures from Beijing.

The US markets were closed on Monday on account of President’s day.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 9,200 mark and the NSE Nifty trading below the 2,800 mark.

Ranbaxy Laboratories reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (0.85%) at Rs. 206.80 while DLF the top loser down by (5.64%) at Rs. 147.15.

The overall market breadth is negative as 301 stocks are advancing while 875 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.30AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 174.74 points at 9,130.71 and the Nifty was down by 52.05 points to 2,796.45.

The BSE Mid Cap decreased by 46.04 points to 2,878.71 and the BSE Small Cap fell by 37.27 points to 3,286.37.

BSE Realty index is trading lower by 64.93 points or (4.27%) to trade at 1,454.44. The top losers are DLF decreased by (5.42%) to Rs.147.50, Ansal Infra down by (4.35%) to Rs.26.40, Unitech declined by (4.48%) to Rs.28.80 followed by India Bull Real fell by (4.06%) to Rs. 94.60.

BSE Bank index is trading lower by 134.99 points or (2.82%) to trade at 4,659.79. The major losers are ICICI Bank declined by (3.86%) to Rs. 393.40, SBI down by (2.68%) to Rs.1,105.60, AXIS Bank decreased by (2.61%) to Rs.407.80 followed by HDFC Bank fell by (2.21%) to Rs.894.50.

Power Grid is trading lower by (3.24%) at Rs. 86.55. The company’s board has approved investments of Rs.51.81 billion to strengthen its transmission network in the southern, northern and western grid. The investment will be made over the three years period.

ONGC slipped by (1.35%) to Rs. 678.20. ONGC has entered into a strategic alliance with M/s Weatherford, a leading international oilfield service provider to jointly work in various areas.

Markets Open Lower, Interim Budget Eyed- Feb 16, 2009

The markets today open sharply lower on the back of weak cues from the Asian markets. Further the traders want to stay on the sidelines ahead of the keenly awaited Interim Budget. Today the interim Budget is to be presented by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee who is currently holding the charge of Finance Ministry. The budget is likely to announce some measures to reduce the impact of the global economic meltdown on the Indian economy. There are expectations that there will be a stimulus package for the export oriented sectors and some sops for the infrastructure as well.

The Realty, Auto and Consumer Durables stocks are trading higher in the opening trade. However, the Banking, Oil & Gas, FMCG, Power and Metal are witnessing selling pressure. The broader markets are however trading marginally higher in the early trade.

The Asian markets are trading mostly lower barring Shanghai Composite index which is higher by (1.32%). However the Hang Seng, Nikkei 225, Seoul Composite and Straits Times index are trading lower by (1.71%), (0.21%), (0.76%) and (0.41%) respectively. Asian markets fell after a government report showed that Japan’s gross domestic product slumped 12.7% in the fourth quarter. Japan’s economy shrank the most since 1974.

The US stock market on Friday closed lower as selling pressure emerged among the financials in the last hour of trading. This has led the Dow Jones industrial average once again close below the 8000 mark at its lowest close since last November. The US Senate has approved the USD 787 billion dollar financial stability plan to boost the ailing economy, on the same day after the House of Representatives passed it. U.S. markets are closed Monday in observance of Presidents Day. President Barack Obama will officially sign the same on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped by 82.35 points to close at 7,850.41. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 7.35 points to close at 1,534.36 and the S&P 500 (SPX) fell by 8.35 points to close at 826.84.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 9,600 mark and the NSE Nifty trading below the 2,930 mark.

DLF reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (2.99%) at Rs. 165.40 while HDFC Bank the top loser down by (3.44%) at Rs. 913.

The overall market breadth is positive as 689 stocks are advancing while 542 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.30AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 86 points at 9,548.74 and the Nifty was down by 24.65 points to 2,923.70.

The BSE Mid Cap increased by 5.49 points to 3,018.44 and the BSE Small Cap grew by 22.36 points to 3,417.94.

BSE Realty index is trading higher by 26.54 points or (1.67%) to trade at 1,618.90. The top gainers are Mahindra Life increased by (6.07%) to Rs.131, Parsavnath up by (3.35%) to Rs.41.70, HDIL inclined by (2.22%) to Rs.89.60 followed by DLF grew by (2.09%) to Rs. 163.95.

BSE Bank index is trading lower by 86.85 points or (1.73%) to trade at 4,938.07. The major losers are HDFC Bank declined by (3.45%) to Rs. 912.90, AXIS Bank up by (2.66%) to Rs.427.50, SBI decreased by (2.26%) to Rs.1,167 followed by Bank of India fell by (2.01%) to Rs.246.60.

NTPC is trading lower by (0.30%) at RS. 182.35. NTPC has entered in to an MOU with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) for development of Nuclear Power in India. The company for this purpose has form a Joint Venture Company for setting up Nuclear Power Projects. NPCIL shall hold 51% equity and the company will hold the balance 49% in the proposed joint nevnture.

Markets Are Still Holding Positive Momentum - Aug 20 , 2008

Markets are continuing to sustain the positive momentum and trading with gains. Most of the buying is seen in Metal, Capital Goods, Reality, Pharma and Bank stocks. Midcap and Small cap stocks are also witnessing buying interest. However, IT and FMCG stocks are out of favor as most of the selling is seen from these baskets. Among the Sensex pack 22 stocks are trading in green while 8 are in red.

The markets are not showing any signs of recovery as selling pressure continued across the board mainly led by the Auto, Consumer Durables, Bank and FMCG stocks. The BSE Sensex has lost more than 1% with the BSE Mid Cap and BSE Small Cap stocks are also trading with a cut of around 1% each.
