Markets Opened Lower In Line With Asian Peers- March 9, 2009

The markets today opened lower on the back of mixed cues from the global markets. The Asian markets are also trading lower. All the sectorial indices are trading in red in the early trade. The selling pressure witnessed among the IT, Oil & Gas, Consumer Durables and Power stocks. The BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap index are also trading lower in the early trade.

The Asian markets are trading lower today as Nikkei 255, Shanghai Composite, Hang Seng and Straits Times index are trading lower by (0.81%), (1.04%), (1.76%) and (1.95%) respectively. However, Seoul Composite index is trading marginally higher by (0.23%).

The US stock markets on Friday ended in mixed after a sharp volatile session, as weak economic data weighed over the sentiments. Further the financial sector remained in pressure that sent the S&P 500 and the Dow past prior session lows to their worst intraday levels since 1996. The nonfarm payrolls in February fell 651,000, in-line with expectations and the unemployment climbed more than expected to a 25-year high of 8.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) advanced by 32.50 points to close at 6,626.94. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 5.74 points to close at 1,293.85 and the S&P 500 (SPX) grew by 0.83 points to close at 683.38.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 8,250 mark and the NSE Nifty trading below the 2,600 mark.

HDFC reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (2.51%) at Rs. 1,254 while HUL reported the top loser down by (2.61%) at Rs. 218.10.

The overall market breadth is negative as 458 stocks are advancing while 700 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.33AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 96.90 points at 8,228.92 and the Nifty was down by 32.55 points to 2,587.60.

The BSE Mid Cap decreased by 14.61 points to 2,571.69 and the BSE Small Cap fell by 14.99 points to 2,896.74.

BSE Oil & Gas index is trading lower by 82.80 points or (1.45%) to trade at 5,641.26. The top losers are BPCL decreased by (2.11%) to Rs.370.30, HPCL down by (2.04%) to Rs.267, RNRL declined by (1.91%) to Rs.35.95 followed by Indian Oil fell by (1.26%) to Rs. 427.

BSE IT index is trading lower by 27.77 points or (1.34%) to trade at 2,044.55. The major losers are Rolta Ind declined by (7.79%) to Rs. 44.95, Patni Computer down by (2.24%) to Rs.107, TCS decreased by (1.52%) to Rs.473.50 followed by Tech Mahindra down by (1.52%) to Rs.249.90.

Power Grid is trading lower by (0.97%) at Rs. 91.65. The company is planning to invest Rs 1,200 crore over the next three years in its telecom business. The company is in talks with a couple of television channels for providing its network for video streaming facilities.
