Markets Today Open Lower - Aug 08 , 2008

The markets today open lower on the back of negative cues from the US markets. But suddenly the market turned choppy and is swinging between the positive and negative territory. The buying is seen in the Metal, Pharma, Consumer Durables and FMCG stocks. However, the Banking, Auto and IT stocks are in the pressure in the opening trade. The BSE Mid Cap and BSE Small cap are however trading higher and have outperformed the benchmark index in the opening bell.

The overall market breadth is positive as 942 stocks are advancing whereas 641 stocks are declining on BSE.

ONGC reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading with a gain of (3.32%) at Rs.1,057.10 while Tata Motors reported the top loser down by (2.41%) at Rs.433.50.

At 10.30AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 138.35 points at 14,978.90 and the Nifty was down by 33.10 points to 4,490.75.

The BSE Mid Cap increased by 0.37 points to 5,881.98 and the BSE Small Cap advanced by 15.63 points to 7,182.62.

BSE Metal index surged by 154.10 points to trade at 13,040.07. The major gainers are JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Sterlite Industries and Ispat Industries grew by (2.21%), (2.07%), (1.81%) and (1.77%) to Rs.805, Rs.656.10, Rs.625.10 and Rs.28.70 respectively.

BSE Bank index dropped by 55.62 points to trade at 7,227.53. The top losers are AXIS Bank decreased by (1.82%) to Rs.734.90, ICICI Bank down by (1.34%) to Rs.699, HDFC Bank declined by (1.01%) to Rs.1,241 followed by Indus Ind Bank grew by (0.47%) to Rs.63.50.
