Markets Are Trading Near Day’s Low - Feb 17, 2009

The markets are now trading at day’s low as selling pressure intensified. Further the negative opening of the European markets also added to the sentiments today. Moreover the cues from Asian markets are not that encouraging. All the sectorial indices are trading in red. The Realty and Banking stocks are out of favor today and got hammered badly after the much-awaited interim budget fails to provide any economic stimulus package to beaten down sectors. The Consumer Durables, Metal, IT and Oil & Gas stocks are also on the seller’s ride today. The BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap indices are also trading lower with a cut of more than 2% each.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 9,050 mark and the NSE Nifty is trading below the 2,800 mark.

The overall market breadth is negative as 557 stocks are advancing while 1697 stocks are declining in BSE.

ITC reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack. It is trading higher by (0.39%) at Rs.181.10 while ICICI Bank the top loser down by (6.67%) at Rs. 381.90.

At 2.30PM BSE Sensex is at 9,033.28 down by 272.17 points and Nifty is at 2,768.15 down by 80.35 points.

The BSE Mid Cap is lower by 64.35 points at 2,860.40 and the BSE Small Cap decreased by 73.23 points to 3,250.91.

The BSE Bankex index is trading with losses of 223.38 points at 4,571.40. Losers from this pack are ICICI Bank trading down by 6.51% at Rs382.55 along with Oriental Bank by 5.75% at Rs118, Axis bank by 4.96% at Rs398, Bank Of India by 4.56% at Rs227.20, HDFC bank by 4.36% at Rs874.85, Bank Of Baroda by 3.88% at Rs227.70, Indus Ind bank by 3.74% at Rs32.15, IOB by 3.51% at Rs56.35, State Bank Of India by 3.30% at Rs1098.50, IDBI Bank by 2.27% at Rs51.70 and Canara Bank by 1.92% at Rs183.50.

The Metal index is trading with deep cut of 203.39 points at 4,827.63. Scrips from the losers pack are Tata Steel trading down by 5.87% at Rs173.25 followed by Hindalco Industries by 5.08% at Rs42.05, Gujarat NRE Coke by 4.99% at Rs21.90, Sesa Goa by 4.57% at Rs86.65, Jindal Steel by 4.40% at Rs970.10, SAIL by 4.33% at Rs82.85, Sterlite Industries by 3.37% at Rs253.70, Ispat Industries by 3.36% at Rs10.63, Welspun Gujarat by 3.31% at Rs68.65.

The most active shares on NSE are Unitech trading at Rs.28.65 with a total traded quantity of 32602814 shares followed by Satyam Computers trading at Rs.50.75 with a total traded quantity of 28561002 shares.

On the global markets front, the European markets are trading lower as FTSE and DAX index are trading lower by (0.94%) and (1.69%) respectively.

Oracle Financial Services Software is trading lower by 1.32% at Rs666.60. The company today announced Oracle Flexcube Direct banking 5.0, an internet and mobile banking application that addresses the direct banking needs of financial institutions ranging from traditional brick and mortar and click and mortar institutions to direct business entities of the banks.
