Markets Today Open Marginally Lower And Turned Choppy - Aug 04 , 2008

The markets today open marginally lower and turned choppy on the back of negative cues from the global markets. The selling pressure is seen in the Oil & Gas and FMCG stocks. However, the Consumer Durables, Bank, IT and Power stocks are trading higher in the opening trade. The BSE Mid Cap and BSE Small Cap are also trading higher and has outperformed the benchmark index in the opening bell.

The overall market breadth is positive as 1203 stocks are advancing whereas 500 stocks are declining on BSE.

Maruti Suzuki reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading with a gain of (1.91%) at Rs.571.20 while HDFC top loser down by (2.50%) at Rs.2,342.05.

At 10.30AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 25.35 points at 14,631.34 and the Nifty was down by 3.15 points to 4,410.40.

The BSE Mid Cap increased by 62.40 points to 5,705.14 and the BSE Small Cap advanced by 72.28 points to 7,052.39.

BSE Bank index advanced by 116.69 points to trade at 6,845.34. The major gainers are IDBI Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and AXIX Bank grew by (2.79%), (1.99%), (1.64%) and (0.96%) to Rs.81.10, Rs.1,129.35, Rs.652.60 and Rs.686.85 respectively.

BSE Capital Goods index improved by 125.48 points to trade at 12,257.48. The top gainers are Siemens increased by (2.71%) to Rs.591.20, BEML up by (1.35%) to Rs.711, Punj Lloyd inclined by (0.74%) to Rs.284.40 followed by BHEL grew by (0.20%) to Rs.1,759.95.

NTPC is trading higher by (1.02%) at Rs.178.60. The company is planning to enter into an agreement with the three Oman based companies to set up power projects in the Gulf countries.

SAIL advanced by (0.35%) to Rs.145. The company is setting up a 1 lakh tonne ferro alloys plant in Bhilai at an estimated investment of Rs 400 crore. For this the company has joined hands with the Nagpur-based Manganese Ore India Limited.
