Indian Benchmark Indices Continue Trading With Negative Sentiments - Jan 20, 2009

Taking cues from its global counterparts, the Indian benchmark indices continue trading with negative sentiments. The BSE Sensex is trading nearly 3% down as foreign funds started fresh selling after Royal Bank of Scotland posted the largest loss in the UK’s banking history. The trading sentiments of investors distinctly weak as global financial crises worsened after Royal Bank of Scotland unveiled unprecedented loss in the British Corporate sectors. Heavy selling pressure has emerged across the board with Bankex, Metal and Realty leading the decline. The Bankex index on the BSE is down by 3.44%, while BSE Metal index has declined by 2.85%. The market breadth is Negative as 1127 stocks are trading in green while 712 stocks are in red.

At 11.34 AM, the BSE Sensex down by 243.39 points at 9,086.17 while NSE Nifty declined by 73.94 points at 2,772.25. The BSE Mid Cap and BSE Small Cap are trading lower by 28.87 points and 16.65 points at 3,014.66 and 3,434.8 respectively.

Losers from the BSE Sensex Pack are Bharti Airtel Ltd down by (4.78%) to Rs.616.05, along with Housing Development Finance Corporation by (4.49%) to Rs.1477, ICICI Bank by (4.42%) at Rs.394.8, Reliance Communication by (4.38%) at Rs.176.85, Sterlite industries by (3.60%) to Rs.260.9 and Maruti suzuki by (3.43%) at Rs.558.6.

Losers from the NSE Nifty Pack are Zee entertainment down by (5.16%) at Rs.124.15 along with Ambuja Cements by (4.91%) at Rs.69.7, Bharti Airtel by (4.74%) at Rs.616.2, Housing Development Finance corporation by (4.54%) at Rs.1475.85 and ICICI Bank by (4.53%) at Rs.393.9.

BSE Bankex is trading lower by (3.44%) or 171.76 points at 4,817.36. The top losers in the index are ICICI Bank down by (4.49%) to Rs.394.50 along with Axis Bank by (3.91%) to Rs.421.20, HDFC Bank by (3.30%) to Rs.908.90, Punjab National Bank by (3.29%) to Rs.440.70 followed by SBI by (3.09%) at Rs.1,111.95.

BSE Metal is trading lower by (2.85%) or 145.24 points at 4,942.80. The top losers in the index are Sesa Goa Ltd up by (4.45%) to Rs.75.10 along with SAIL by (4.42%) to Rs.79, Sterlite Industries by (3.66%) to Rs.260.75, Welspun Gujarat SR by (3.64) to Rs.91.35, followed by Tata Steel by (3.58%) to Rs.200.75.
