Sensex Plunges Nearly 300 Pts In Early Trade @ 10:12 Hrs

Heavy selling in information technology, bank, realty, capital goods and power stocks has sent the benchmark BSE index Sensex tumbling down by nearly 300 points in early trade this morning. The market, which had recorded some hefty gains last week, has declined sharply this morning due to weak global sentiment.

At 16,098.56, a few points off a low of 16,073.87 it had touched a little while ago, the Sensex is 272.73 points or 1.67% from its previous closing mark at present. The Nifty, which plunged to 4863.25, is down with a loss of 63.85 points or 1.29% at 4878.15.

Information technology majors - Infosys Technologies (down 4.45%0, Wipro (down 3.95%), Satyam Computer Services (down 1.45%) and Tata Consultancy Services (down 1.3%) have declined sharply.

Reliance Industries has slipped by over 2% to Rs 2300. Banking sector heavyweights ICICI Bank (down 3.65%), State Bank of India (down 2.25%) and HDFC Bank (down 2.2%) have also contributed to the sharp fall of the Sensex.

Tata Steel, Reliance Energy, Reliance Communications, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Jaiprakash Associates, HDFC, BHEL, DLF and Hindustan Unilever are down by 1% - 3% from their previous closing levels.

ACC, Ambuja Cements, Bharti Airtel, Grasim Industries, Hindalco, Hindustan Unilever, Maruti Suzuki and NTPC trade flat. Tata Motors has lost around 0.8%. Cipla (2.5%) has bucked the trend and posted a smart gain.

Cairn India, Tata Communications, Suzlon Energy, Unitech, Punjab National Bank, Hero Honda, Reliance Petroleum, Zee Entertainment, BPCL, Idea Cellular, SAIL and Siemens are among the prominent losers in the Nifty index. Tata Power has recorded a modest gain.
