Market Volatile Amid Global Cues - June 18, 2009

After a subdued start, the major Indian bourses turned volatile as traders have chosen a cautious path amid lack of encouraging cues from the global counterparts. After registering a fourth biggest single-session fall this year on Wednesday, the sentiments across the market are still bleak as funds and investors indulged in liquidating their positions, tracking weak overseas markets.

On a stock specific news, Wockhardt Limited is trading higher by 4% after an announcement that company has sold its German subsidiary Esparma to another German company, Lindopharm GmbH, under a plan to divest its non-core businesses.

During the last hours’ trading session, selling pressure has emerged across PSU and Metal while buying interest has emerged across IT and TECk.

Among the BSE Sectoral indices, PSU, Metal and Power dipped by 1.44%, 1.35% and 0.94% respectively while IT and TECk surged by 0.85% and 0.53% respectively.

Overall market breadth is negative. Out of the total 2,106 stocks traded at BSE, 1,399 declined, 641 advanced while 66 remained unchanged.

The BSE Sensex is marginal down by 12.67 points at 14,510 while NSE Nifty declined by 26.7 points at 4,329.45.

Besides, the BSE Mid Cap and Small Cap are trading lower by 42.37 points and 80.16 Points to 4,978.70 and 5,706.04 respectively.

Losers from the BSE Sensex Pack are ACC Limited declined by (4.85%) to Rs. 786.45, along with ONGC by (3.85%) to Rs. 1,023.3, Tata Steel by (3.36%) at Rs. 403, NTPC Limited by (3.06%) at Rs. 207.4, Grasim Industries by (2.27%) at Rs. 2,264 and HDFC bank by (1.94%) at Rs. 1,517.

Losers from the NSE Nifty Pack are ACC Limited down by (5.04%) at Rs. 787.3 along with Ambuja Cements by (4.80%) at Rs. 92.25, NTPC Limited by (3.44%) at Rs. 206.35, ONGC by (3.41%) at Rs. 1,025, Tata Steel by (3.21%) at Rs. 403.6 and Unitech Limited by (2.86%) at Rs. 81.6.

BSE PSU is trading lower by (1.44%) or 116.96 points at 7,996.67. The top losers in the index are Dredg Corp by (4.66%) to Rs. 511.45 along with Engineers In declined by (4.01%) to Rs. 949.80, Hind copper by (3.72%) to Rs. 243.60, NMDC Limited by (3.46%) to Rs. 370.1 followed by NTPC Limited by (3.06%) at Rs. 207.4.

BSE IT is trading higher by (0.85%) or 27.27 points at 3,224.30. The major gainers are TCS Limited surged by (1.27%) at Rs. 383.80 along with Infosys Technologies by (1.26%) at Rs. 1,732, Wipro Limited by (0.67%) at Rs. 381.20 followed by Patni Computers by (0.21%) at Rs. 240.9.
