Markets Today Opened Significantly Higher With BSE Sensex - April 13, 2009

The markets today opened significantly higher with the BSE Sensex crossed the 10,900 mark in the early trade on the back of positive global cues. However, suddenly the markets turned volatile as profit booking emerged at higher level. The smart buying witnessed among the Banking, Metal, Pharma and Auto stocks. However, the IT stocks are witnessing some selling pressure in the early trade. The broader market stocks are also in demand in the early trade as both the BSE Mid Cap and the BSE Small Cap are trading with a gain of more than 1% each.

At 10.34AM, the BSE Sensex was up by 15.39 points at 10,819.25 and the Nifty was up by 1.75 points to 3,343.80.

The BSE Mid Cap increased by 50.97 points to 3,409.32 and the BSE Small Cap grew by 52.30 points to 3,819.85.

The Asian markets are trading higher today as Hang Seng, Nikkei 255, Seoul Composite and Straits Times index are trading up by (2.95%), (0.21%), (5.99%) and (2.70%) respectively.

The US stock markets on Thursday surged on the back of better than expected earnings preannouncement from Wells Fargo and the encouraging same store sales data from WalMart that helped Dow move back above 8,000. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) surged by 246.27 points to close at 8,083.38. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index increased by 61.88 points to close at 1,652.54 and the S&P 500 (SPX) grew by 31.40 points to close at 856.56.

Tata Steel reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (5%) at Rs. 274.25 while L&T reported the top loser down by (3.48%) at Rs. 800.

The overall market breadth is positive as 1271 stocks are advancing while 306 stocks are declining on BSE.

BSE Bank index is trading higher by 178.69 points or (3.54%) to trade at 5,223.96. The top gainers are Kotak Bank increased by (4.42%) to Rs.386.50, HDFC Bank up by (4.23%) to Rs.1,090.35, ICICI Bank inclined by (3.85%) to Rs.413 followed by AXIS Bank grew by (3.03%) to Rs. 458.

BSE Metal index is trading higher by 240.42 points or (3.53%) at 7,041.98. The major gainers are Jai Corp up by (10%) to Rs. 141.90, Tata Steel grew by (5%) at Rs. 274.25, Jindal Saw up by (4.09%) to Rs. 228 and Sterlite Industries inclined by (3.95%) to Rs. 411.50.

Satyam is advancing by around (11%) as the company is inching towards the final day of bidding today.

NTPC is declining by (0.31%). The company plans to increase coal imports to 15 million tonnes by 2012 in order to meet demand at its coal-fired plants, in line with the projected expansion in the generation capacity.
