Markets Are Trading With Volatility - Jan 21, 2009

The markets are trading with some choppiness as volatility strikes the markets. The investor’s hesitate take any fresh positions. The markets across the globe slipped on renewed fears of global economic meltdown. The Banking, Power, Realty, Metal and Capital Goods stocks are out of favor today. The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 9,000 mark and the NSE Nifty around the 2,750 mark. The BSE Mid Cap And the Small Cap stocks are also trading lower today. Banking stocks were under severe pressure today, on the back of weakness across global financial stocks.

Wipro reported 3.51% rise in net profit to Rs.1,003.90 crore for the Oct-Dec quarter compared with Rs.969.80 crore in the previous quarter. However the net profit rose 18% on a year-on-year basis. On a standalone basis, the company''s net profit stood at Rs. 733 crore in the Oct-Dec period against Rs. 852.50 crore sequentially.

On the global markets front, the Asian markets are trading mostly lower as Hang Seng, Shanghai Composite, Nikkei, Straits Times and Seoul Composite index are trading lower by (2.34%), (1.09%), (2.04%), (2.08%) and (2.06%) respectively.

The overall market breadth is negative as 876 stocks are advancing while 1102 stocks are declining and the 106 stocks remain unchanged on BSE.

Hindustan Unilever reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack as it was trading higher by (2.25%) at Rs. 251.75 while Tata Power the top loser down by (4.40%) at Rs.736.10.

The BSE Mid cap is lower by 13.14 points at 3,002.87 and the BSE small Cap slipped by 11.19 points to trade at 3,427.90.

At 12.35 pm, BSE Sensex was at 8,982.85 down by 117.70 points while the NSE Nifty was at 2,763.15 down by 33.45 points.

BSE Auto declined by 8.65 points to 2,467.82. Leading to its fall are Mahindra & Mahindra (1.98%), Bajaj Auto (1.06%), Ashok Leyland (1%) and Maruti Suzuki (0.96%).

BSE IT index decreased by 15.58 points to trade at 2,130.43 as Wipro (2.94%), Rolta Ind. (2.08%), Patni Computer (1.32%), Infosys Technologies (0.99%) and TCS (0.22%) are trading in negative.

BSE Metal index dropped by 64.20 points to 4,832.59 as Sterlite Industries (3.88%), SAIL (3.87%), Jindal Steel (2.12%), Tata Steel (2.10%), JSW Steel (1.07%) and Ispat Industries (0.94%) are trading in red.

BSE Bankex index is trading lower by 88.19 points at 4,745.62. Losers are ICICI Bank (4.23%), Bank of India (2.47%), HDFC Bank (2.18%), IDBI Bank (1.97%) and Indian Overseas Bank (1.30%).

BSE Power index is trading 20.86 points lower at 1,782.23. The main losers are Tata Power (4.93%), Torent Power (3.78%), Power Grid (3.11%), Suzlon Energy (1.63%) and NTPC (1.32%).
