The markets today open higher on the back of positive cues from the global markets. All the sectorial indices are trading in green in the opening trade mainly led by the Metal, Banking, Power, Capital Goods and Oil & Gas stocks. The BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap are also trading higher with a gain of more than 1% in the early trade.
The BSE Sensex is now trading above the 9,000 mark and the NSE Nifty is trading above the 2,750 mark.
The Asian markets are also trading higher as Shanghai Composite, Hang Seng, Nikkei and Straits Times index are trading higher by (0.13%), (3.24%), (2.22%) and (2.63%) respectively.
The US stock market on Monday, surged after the government’s rescue plan for Citigroup that includes a direct $20 billion investment and $306 billion in asset guarantees. Further the news that President-elect Obama unveiled his economic team prospects of another economic stimulus package by January also added to the rally. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) surged by 396.97 points to close at 8,443.39. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index increased by 87.67 points to close at 1,472.02 and the S&P 500 (SPX) grew by 51.78 points to close at 851.81.
The overall market breadth is positive as 998 stocks are advancing whereas 362 stocks are declining on BSE.
HDFC Bank reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading with a gain of (5.35%) at Rs. 876 while Maruti Suzuki reported the top loser down by (0.97%) to Rs. 524.80.
At 10.33AM, the BSE Sensex was up by 149.49 points at 9,052.61 and the Nifty was up by 49.30 points to 2,757.55.
The BSE Mid Cap increased by 37.50 points to 2,939.79 and the BSE Small Cap advanced by 34.75 points to 3,398.71.
BSE Metal index is trading higher by 138.98 points or (3.22%) to trade at 4,448.71. The top gainers are Jindal Steel increased by (4.87%) to Rs.736.50, Sterlite Industries up by (3.75%) to Rs.222.65, NALCO inclined by (3.28%) to Rs.187.550 followed by SAIL and JSW Steel grew by (2.90%) and (2.88%) to Rs. 63.90 and Rs. 194.50.
BSE Bank index is trading higher by 133.97 points or (3.01%) to trade at 4,588.65. The major gainers are HDFC Bank inclined by (5.35%) to Rs. 876, ICICI Bank up by (4.63%) to Rs.337.50, Kotak Bank increased by (4%) to Rs.325.30 followed by AXIS Bank grew by (2.39%) to Rs.407.10.
ONGC is trading higher by (3.24%) at Rs. 700.50. It has made a significant oil discovery in an eastern offshore acreage in Andhra Pradesh at Block IG at a water depth of 225 meters in well G-4-6, 15 km. off Yanam coast. The discovery is the most significant find after the ultra-deep sea gas discovery in Krishna-Godavari basin in December 2006.
