The Markets Today Open Sharply Lower - Sep 1, 2008

The markets today open sharply lower tracking weak cues from the global markets. The selling pressure is seen in the Banking, Power, Capital Goods and Realty stocks. However, the Oil & Gas, Pharma and Consumer Durables stocks are trading higher in the opening trade. The BSE Mid Cap and the BSE Small Cap are also trading lower in the opening bell.

The overall market breadth is negative as 763 stocks are advancing whereas 878 stocks are declining on BSE.

Hindalco Industries reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading with a gain of (0.82%) at Rs.123.50 while Tata Motors reported the top loser down by (2.35%) at Rs.430.

At 10.30AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 118.54 points at 14,445.39 and the Nifty was down by 34.60 points to 4,325.40.

The BSE Mid Cap increased by 2.08 points to 5,744.37 while the BSE Small Cap slipped by 2.85 points to 6,888.79.

BSE Oil & Gas index advanced by 33.23 points to trade at 9,692.69. The top gainers are ABN Off Shore increased by (2.59%) to Rs.2,134, Essar Oil up by (1.72%) to Rs.213, RPL inclined by (0.80%) to Rs.158.30 followed by Cairn India grew by (0.74%) to Rs.250.75.

BSE Bank index dropped by 108.37 points to trade at 6,901.32. The major losers are Kotak Bank, AXIS Bank, ICICI Bank and SBI fell by (2.93%), (2.25%), (1.71%) and (1.61%) to Rs.588, Rs.707, Rs.660 and Rs.1,381 respectively.

L&T is trading lower by (1.07%) at Rs.2,565.90. The company is expecting Rs.600bn of new orders this year despite a slowdown in some businesses
