With strong global markets and positive news flow from India Inc aiding the bulls, it is a buoyant start for the benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty this morning.
The Sensex, which opened with a positive gap of around 135 points at 16,288.76, has rallied to 16,377.04 now, netting a sharp gain of 223.38 points or 1.38%. The Nifty has gained 1.26% or 61.60 points at 4941.25.
Information technology stocks, which held the centrestage yesterday, have extended their gains and mirroring the sharp rise in prices of key software stocks, the BSE IT index has moved up by over 3% now.
PSU, realty, capital goods, power, metal and pharma stocks have also posted smart gains. Select oil, auto and bank stocks have also surged higher on firm buying enquiries in early trade.
IT bellwether Infosys Technologies has gained nearly 4% at Rs 1570 now. Wipro has recorded a gain of 3.15%. Tata Consultancy Services and Satyam Computer Services have gained 2.45% and 2.2% respectively.
Shares of engineering & construction sector giant Larsen & Toubro are in demand. Besides a fat order book, the company's agreement with the Tamil Nadu Government to set up a Rs 3068 crore integrated ship building and port facility in Chennai appears to be driving the stock up. At Rs 2870, the stock has gained 2.25% over its previous closing price now.
Reliance Energy has notched up a gain of 3.5%. Tata Steel, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Reliance Communications, Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI Bank, HDFC, Hindalco, Jaiprakash Associates, Bharti Airtel and DLF have gained 1% - 2%.
ACC,BHEL, Cipla, Grasim Industries, ITC, Maruti Suzuki, NTPC, ONGC, Reliance Industries and State Bank of India are also up in the positive territory with notable gains. Tata Motors is up with a marginal gain while Ambuja Cements and Hindustan Unilever have suffered minor losses.
Thanks to a good show by the company in the quarter ended March 31, 2008, HCL Technologies has vaulted nearly 5% to Rs 257. Tata Power, Reliance Petroleum, Cairn India, Unitech, SAIL, Siemens, Tata Communications, Suzlon Energy, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, GAIL India, Power Grid and ABB are the other prominent gainers in the Nifty index.
Orchid Chemicals has rallied 7.25% to Rs 307.60 on strong buying in opening trade. Within minutes of commencement of trade this morning, more than 5 million shares have changed hands at the Orchid Chemicals counter on NSE. Amtek India (5.4%), RNRL (3.35%), Reliance Capital (3.15%) and TV 18 (3.25%) are among the other actively traded stocks.
