Market Turned Volatile: Consumer Durable Gains - May 20, 2009

After a negative opening, the major Indian bourses turned volatile amid mixed cues from the global market. The UPA government is on the verge to form a new cabinet today and the swearing will be done on May 22nd. On a stock specific news, Essar Oil is trading up by over 14% after an announcement that it will spend USD 70 mn in the current fiscal for its Ratna gas exploration block off Mumbai and Raniganj coal bed methane block in West Bengal.

During the last hours'' trading session, buying interest seen across Consumer Durable (CD), Metal and Auto stocks whereas Selling pressure has emerged across Banking counters. Among the BSE sectoral indices, CD, Metal and Auto stocks surged by 4.66%, 3.87% and 3.01% respectively, while the BSE Bankex declined by 0.57% respectively.

Overall the market breadth is positive as 1747 stocks are trading in green while 348 stocks are in red.

The BSE Sensex surged by 64.41 points at 14,366.45 while NSE Nifty up by 33.15 points at 4,351.6. Besides, the BSE Mid Cap and Small Cap are trading higher by 227.68 points and 321.44 points at 4,635.51 and 5,105.59 respectively.

Gainers from the BSE Sensex Pack are Tata Steel up by (7.70%) to Rs. 354.5, along with Jai Prakash Associate by (5.74%) to Rs. 174.05, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd by (5.69%) at Rs. 663.05, Reliance Infrastructure Ltd by (5.69%) at Rs. 1,119.75, Hindalco Industries by (5.48%) at Rs. 81.8 and Tata Motors by (5.20%) at Rs.321.4.

Losers from the NSE Nifty Pack are BHEL declined by (5.20%) at Rs. 2055 along with Reliance Communication Ltd by (4.09%) at Rs. 303.3, ICICI Bank by (3.94%) at Rs. 726.35, Bharti Airtel by (3.76%) at Rs. 880.7, DLF Ltd by (3.34%) at Rs. 367.85 and Sun Pharma by (3.21%) at Rs. 1329.85.

BSE CD is trading higher by (4.66%) or 106.87 points at 2,400.8. The major gainers are Videcon Industries surged by (8.81%) at Rs. 140.25 along with Rajesh Export by (5.72%) at Rs. 33.25, Gitanjali GE by (4.13%) at Rs. 84.55 followed by Titan Industries by (2.83%) at Rs. 1,023.

BSE Bankex is trading lower by (0.57%) or 46.42 points at 8,071.94. The top losers in the index are ICICI Bank declined by (3.51%) to Rs.731.95 along with Bank of Baroda by (2.78%) to Rs. 440.75, HDFC Bank by (2.39%) to Rs. 1,374, followed by Canara Bank by (0.22%) at Rs. 276.
