Markets Opened Marginally Higher - April 16, 2009

The markets opened marginally higher today. The positive global cues also supported the markets. But suddenly the markets turned volatile as selling emerged among the frontline stocks. The Mid Cap and the Small Cap indices continued its upward journey and have outperformed the benchmark indices in the early trade. The Realty, Consumer Durables, Banking and Auto stocks posted decent gains. However the IT and Oil & Gas stocks remained in pressure. Both the BSE Mid Cap and the BSE Small Cap are trading with a gain of more than 1% each. Further the inflation data, scheduled to be announced around noon.

At 10.34AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 22.57 points at 11,262.18 and the Nifty was down by 7.20 points to 3,476.95.

The BSE Mid Cap increased by 49.75 points to 3,651.64 and the BSE Small Cap grew by 81.28 points to 4,204.73.

The Asian markets are trading higher today as Hang Seng, Nikkei 255, Seoul Composite and Straits Times index are trading down by (0.15%), (0.57%), (1.20%) and (0.44%) respectively. China’s Q1 GDP was up by 6.1% as against 6.8% (QoQ). While the country’s GDP expanded 6.1% (YoY), the slowest pace in nearly a decade.

The US stock markets on Wednesday ended higher after a late day surge of buying interest and a spike in trading volume helped all three major indices to finish at their session highs. The financials got a surge in the final hour of trading that led the sector finished with a gain of 5.6% for the session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) surged by 109.44 points to close at 8,029.62. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index increased by 1.08 points to close at 1,626.80 and the S&P 500 (SPX) grew by 10.56 points to close at 852.06.

DLF reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (5.76%) at Rs. 271.60 while Infosys Technologies reported the top loser down by (3.05%) at Rs. 1,329.

The overall market breadth is positive as 1342 stocks are advancing while 426 stocks are declining on BSE.

BSE Realty index is trading higher by 146.98 points or (6.36%) to trade at 2,459.51. The top gainers are Unitech increased by (12.49%) to Rs.54.05, Ansal Infra up by (7.42%) to Rs.42, Orbit Co inclined by (6.50%) to Rs.86 followed by Mahindra Life grew by (6.11%) to Rs. 204.

BSE Bank index is trading higher by 61.42 points or (1.11%) at 5,602.87. The major gainers are IDBI Bank up by (3.92%) to Rs. 63.70, Bank of Baroda grew by (3.37%) at Rs. 291.50, PNB up by (2.68%) to Rs. 488.15 and ICICI Bank inclined by (2.51%) to Rs. 454.85.
