The Markets Turned Choppy - March 27, 2009

The markets turned choppy and are now trading around the unchanged mark following mixed cues from the Asian markets. The Metal index has outperformed the benchmark index as its now trading with a gain of more than 3%. However, the Pharma, Banking, Realty and Capital Goods indices have given up some of their early gains but are still trading higher. The IT and FMCG stocks are however trading in red. The broader market stocks are on focus today as the BSE Mid Cap and the BSE Small Cap index are trading with a gain of more than 1% each.

On the global markets front, the Asian markets are trading lower barring the Shanghai Composite index, which is trading higher by (0.42%). However, Hang Seng, Nikkei 225, Straits Times and Seoul Composite index are trading down by (0.75%), (0.11%), (1.59%) and (0.51%) respectively.

Tata Steel reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading higher by (5.44%) at Rs. 215.95. However, Infosys Technologies reported the top loser among the BSE Sensex pack, trading down by (2.98%) at Rs. 1,339.50.

The overall market breadth is positive as 1294 stocks are advancing while 936 stocks are declining and the 87 stocks remain unchanged on BSE.

The BSE Mid cap is higher by 45.24 points at 2,919.46 and the BSE small Cap increased by 33.37 points to trade at 3,220.71.

At 12.40 pm, BSE Sensex was at 9,995.82 down by 7.28 points and the NSE Nifty was at 3,092.15 up by 9.90 points.

BSE Oil & Gas index fell by 10.59 points to 7,180.07 as Reliance Industries (0.99%), RPL (0.68%) and ONGC (0.39%) are trading in negative. While Aban Offshore (3.84%), Essar Oil (2.39%) and BPCL (1.61%) are trading in positive.

BSE Realty index inclined by 1 point to 1,615.94 as HDIL (4.21%), Orbit Co (3.65%), Mahindra Life (2.65%), Penland (2.37%) and Parsavnath (1.88%) are trading higher.

BSE Metal index surged by 204.84 points to 6,032.16 as JSW Steel (10.89%), SAIL (5.41%), Tata Steel (5.37%), Jindal Saw (4.90%), NALCO (3.57%) and Hindalco Industries (3.35%) are trading higher.

BSE Bankex index is trading higher by 51.94 points at 4,758.16. The main gainers are Canara Bank (4.58%), Union Bank (4.28%), Bank of Baroda (3.27%) and Indus Ind Bank (2.84%).

BSE Power index inclined by 1.71 points to 1,884.84. Leading the gainers are Reliance Power (4.20%), Torent Power (2.59%), Suzlon Energy (2.58%) and NTPC (0.08%).

BSE Auto index is trading marginally higher by 2.17 points at 3,003.39. The major gainers are Tata Motors (1.27%), Hero Honda (1.56%) and Bajaj Auto (0.51%). While the major losers are Maruti Suzuki (2.19%), Ashok Leyland (0.56%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (0.19%).

BSE IT index fell by 53.47 points to trade at 2,307.74 as Mphasis (4.82%), Infosys Technologies (2.97%), Wipro (1.90%) and TCS (0.83%) are trading in red.

BSE Capital Goods index advanced by 52.30 points to 6,477.68. The main gainers are Praj Industries (6.42%), Punj Lloyd (5.61%), Havells India (6.51%), L&T (2.62%) and Siemens (2.29%).
