Market Turned Choppy After A Positive Opening- March 16, 2009

After a flat start, market suddenly turned volatile amid mixed cues from the Asian markets. Investors are booking profit from a sharp run-up in the previous trading session. On a stock move, country''s largest telecom company by subscribers Bharti Airtel has decided to restructure its business into nine verticals under the guidance of different CEOs. During last hour, selling interest has emerged in IT and Metal stocks, whereas buying pressure is seen across CD, Realty and Bankex counters. Among the sectoral indices, the BSE IT index is down by 1.02%, while Metal index slipped by 0.71%. On the other hand, the CD and Realty indices on the BSE surged by 2.23% and 1.35% respectively. Overall the market breadth is positive as 965 stocks are trading in green while 721 stocks are in red.

At 11.30 AM, the BSE Sensex down by 29.94 points at 8,726.67 whereas NSE Nifty declined by 10.89 points at 2,708.35. The BSE Mid Cap and Small Cap are trading higher by 17.63 points and 19.05 points at 2,657.99 and 2,953.11 respectively.

Losers from the BSE Sensex Pack are Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd down by (3.12%) to Rs. 1337, along with Sun Pharmaceutical by (2.64%) to Rs. 994.8, Maruti Suzuki by (2.37%) at Rs. 695.5, Reliance Infrastructure Ltd by (1.93%) at Rs. 457.65, Sterlite Industries by (1.80%) at Rs.277.9 and Infosys Tech by (1.26%) at Rs.1280.

Losers from the NSE Nifty Pack are Unitech by (3.21%) at Rs. 25.65 along with Cairn India by (2.97%) at Rs. 165.05, Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd by (2.82%) at Rs. 1338.7, Maruti Suzuki by (2.47%) at Rs. 695.5 and Sun Pharmaceutical by (2.33%) at Rs. 994.

BSE IT is trading lower by (1.02%) or 22.28 points at 2,168.04. The major losers are Patni Computer trading down by (4.14%) at Rs. 105.45, along with Infosys Tech by (1.26%) at Rs.1280, Tech Mahindra by (0.51%) at Rs. 254.30, Wipro Ltd by (0.49%) at Rs. 223.45, followed by TCS Ltd by (0.46%) to Rs. 504.2.

BSE CD is trading higher by (2.23%) or 33.06 points at 1,512.62. The top gainers in the index are Gitanjali GE inclined by (3.53%) to Rs. 36.70 along with Blue Star by (3.20%) to Rs. 138.50, Titan Indus by (3.19%) to Rs. 743, followed by Videocon Indu by (1.30%) at Rs. 86.
