Markets Today Open Lower And Suddenly Turned Volatile - Dec 16, 2008

The markets today open lower and suddenly turned volatile on the back of negative cues from the global markets. The US stocks came into pressure on the back of the $50 billion fraud by the former chairman of the Nasdaq stock exchange and popular broker, Bernard Madoff. The significant buying is seen among the Consumer Durables, IT, Capital Goods, Realty and Power stocks. However the Metal and FMCG stocks are trading lower in the opening trade. The BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap are also trading significantly higher with a gain of more than 1% each.

The BSE Sensex is now trading around the 9,800 mark and the NSE Nifty is trading near the 3,000 mark.

The Asian markets are also trading mixed as Hang Seng is trading higher by (0.23%) while the Shanghai Composite, Nikkei and Straits Times index are trading lower by (1.78%), (1.07%) and (0.15%) respectively.

The US stock market on Monday ended lower, with the financial firms weighed on the broader market. Financial sector was hammered after a fraud of $50 billion by Bernard Madoff was unearthed. Further the investors keep an eye over the Fed rate decision and the Goldman Sachs earnings. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped by 65.15 points to close at 8,564.53. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 32.38 points to close at 1,508.34 and the S&P 500 (SPX) fell 11.16 points to close at 868.57.

Ranbaxy Laboratories reported a top gainer among the BSE Sensex pack up by (2.29%) at Rs. 218.65 while Sterlite Industries the top loser down by (4.45%) at Rs. 294.

The overall market breadth remains positive as 998 stocks are advancing while 408 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.33AM, the BSE Sensex was up by 6.20 points at 9,838.59 and the Nifty was up by 9.90 points to 2,991.90.

The BSE Mid Cap increased by 46.98 points to 3,212.05 and the BSE Small Cap advanced by 55.83 points to 3,714.82.

BSE IT index is trading higher by 45.70 points or (2%) to trade at 2,331.90. The top gainers are HCL Technologies increased by (8.35%) to Rs.112.90, Tech Mahindra up by (5.42%) to Rs.276, TCS inclined by (2.11%) to Rs.479.50 followed by Wipro grew by (1.79%) to Rs. 239.

BSE Capital Goods index is trading higher by 67.62 points or (0.96%) to trade at 7,112.10. The major gainers are Praj Industries inclined by (7.52%) to Rs. 70.05, Gammon India up by (4.32%) to Rs.71.20, Punj Lloyd increased by (4.47%) to Rs.161.40 followed by Siemens grew by (3.76%) to Rs.277.55.
