Asian Markets And The Failure Of The US Auto Bailout - Dec 12, 2008

The markets today open sharply lower in line with the Asian markets and the failure of the US auto bailout to clear the Senate. All the sectorial indices are trading in red in the early trade. The Metal, Realty, Auto, Capital Goods and IT stocks are under pressure today. The BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap are however trading marginally lower.

The BSE Sensex is now trading around the 9,350 mark and the NSE Nifty is trading around the 2,800 mark.

The Asian markets are also trading lower as Hang Seng, Shanghai Composite, Nikkei and Straits Times index are trading lower by (6.90%), (1.69%), (6.64%) and (3.83%) respectively.

The US stock market on Thursday ended lower, amid uncertainty about a bailout of the ailing auto sector and ongoing economic weakness. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped by 196.33 points to close at 8,565.09. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 57.60 points to close at 1,507.88 and the S&P 500 (SPX) fell 25.65 points to close at 873.59.

Jai Prakash Associate reported a top loser among the BSE Sensex pack down by (6.04%) at Rs. 77.75 followed by Tata Motors down by (5.17%) at Rs. 152.25.

The overall market breadth remains negative as 500 stocks are advancing while 781 stocks are declining on BSE.

At 10.33AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 286.57 points at 9,358.89 and the Nifty was down by 85.10 points to 2,835.05.

The BSE Mid Cap decreased by 20.96 points to 2,982.12 and the BSE Small Cap slipped by 5.81 points to 3,437.78.

BSE Metal index is trading lower by 208.91 points or (3.98%) to trade at 5,044.20. The top losers are Nalco increased by (6.66%) to Rs.183, JSW Steel down by (5.44%) to Rs.226.70, Sterlite Industries declined by (5.02%) to Rs.280.25 followed by SAIL fell (4.98%) to Rs. 75.35.

BSE Realty index is trading lower by 80.16 points or (3.91%) to trade at 1,967.42. The major losers are India Bull Real declined by (6.14%) to Rs. 120.70, DLF down by (5.05%) to Rs.243.70, Unitech decreased by (5.05%) to Rs.32.90 followed by HDIL fell (3.51%) to Rs.103.

Mahindra & Mahindra is trading lower by (5.68%) at Rs. 270.70. The company said it was cutting production of tractors in December due to sluggish demand.
