Markets Today Open With A Heavy Gap Global Cues - Nov 20, 2008

The markets today open with a heavy gap down on the back of negative global cues. All the sectorial indices are in red in the opening trade. The selling pressure is een among the Realty, Oil & Gas, Banking, Power and Metal stocks. The BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap are also trading lower with a cut of more than 3% each.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 8,400 mark and the NSE Nifty below the 2,550 mark.

The Asian markets are also trading lower today as Nikkei, Hang Sang, Shanghai Composite and Straits Times index are trading lower by (5.66%), (5.50%), (1.20%) and (3.71%) respectively.

The US stock market on Wednesday plunged sharply and end at more than five-years lows amid concern over the fate of U.S. auto industry and also about financial giant Citigroup. Further, grim readings on consumer price inflation and the battered housing sector coupled with a bleak economy forecast by the Federal Reserve also fueled the selling interest. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped by 427.47 points to close at 7,997.28. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 96.85 points to close at 1,386.42 and the S&P 500 (SPX) fell by 52.54 points to close at 806.58.

The overall market breadth is negative as 220 stocks are advancing whereas 1295 stocks are declining on BSE.

Reliance Infra reported the top loser from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading with a loss of (7.90%) at Rs. 419.90 followed by ICICI Bank down by (7.75%) at Rs.320.75.

At 10.33AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 376.13 points at 8,397.65 and the Nifty was down by 105.80 points to 2,529.20.

The BSE Mid Cap decreased by 106.94 points to 2,891.45 and the BSE Small Cap slipped by 110.94 points to 3,382.18.

BSE Metal index is trading lower by 196.99 points or (4.44%) to trade at 4,239.15. The top losers are JSW Steel decreased by (6.77%) to Rs.222.40, NALCO down by (6.04%) to Rs.142.25, Hindalco Industries declined by (5.38%) to Rs.47.50 followed by Ispat Industries fell by (4.53%) to Rs. 9.90.

BSE Realty index is trading lower by 90.97 points or (4.97%) to trade at 1,739.97. The major losers are Unitech declined by (7.31%) to Rs. 36.15, HDIL down by (7.76%) to Rs.90.90, DLF decreased by (7.13%) to Rs.208.40 followed by Ansal Infra fell by (6.96%) to Rs.32.10.

Gail India is trading lower by (6.80%) at Rs. 178.90. The company is mulling to restructure its gas transportation, marketing and petrochemical businesses into separate subsidiaries, as it aims to more than double its turnover to Rs 50,000 crore over a period of two years.
