Market On Ended Lower As Ongoing Uncertainty - Nov 17, 2008

The markets today open marginally higher and suddenly slipped into red. The markets are now trading choppy. The selling pressure is seen among the Banking, Realty, Consumer Durables, IT and Capital Goods stocks. The BSE Mid Cap and the Small Cap are also trading lower in the opening trade.

The BSE Sensex is now trading below the 9,300 mark and the NSE Nifty below the 2,800 mark.

The Asian markets are also trading mixed today as Nikkei, Hang Sang, Shanghai Composite index are trading higher by 2.63%, 0.41% and 0.43% respectively. However, Straight Times index is trading lower by 0.30%.

The US stock market on Friday, ended lower as ongoing uncertainty in financial markets and global economic conditions hurt investor’s sentiments. The October retail sales decline more than expected as the total sales declined by 2.8%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped by 337.94 points to close at 8,497.31. The NASDAQ Composite (RIXF) index decreased by 79.85 points to close at 1,516.85 and the S&P 500 (SPX) fell by 38 points to close at 873.29.

The overall market breadth is negative as 457 stocks are advancing whereas 988 stocks are declining on BSE.

ONGC reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack, as it is trading with a gain of (1.10%) at Rs.701.20 while ICICI Bank reported the top loser down by (6.14%) at Rs.371.65.

At 10.33AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 168.92 points at 9,216.50 and the Nifty was down by 29.35 points to 2,781.

The BSE Mid Cap decreased by 51.64 points to 3,164.44 and the BSE Small Cap slipped by 40.90 points to 3,724.15.

BSE Metal index is trading higher by 26.82 points or (0.55%) to trade at 4,900.22. The top gainers are NALCO increased by (3.47%) to Rs.182, Sterlite Industries up by (2.07%) to Rs.231.90, Tata Steel inclined by (1.15%) to Rs.175.25 followed by Jindal Steel grew by (1.07%) to Rs. 785.

BSE Bank index is trading lower by 113.16 points or (2.19%) to trade at 5,042.60. The major losers are ICICI Bank declined by (6.58%) to Rs. 369.90, Kotak Bank down by (4.35%) to Rs.362, HDFC Bank decreased by (3.91%) to Rs.972.05 followed by AXIS Bank fell by (3.58%) to Rs.477.15.
