It's a negative start for equities on the major Indian bourses with weak global markets dampening investor sentiment once again. Bank, realty, PSU, power, auto, information technology and capital goods stocks have drifted lower. A few stocks from oil and metal sectors have edged up on selective buying support. Select pharma stocks have also marched on to higher levels in early trade.
The Sensex, which plunged to 14,919.05 after opening with a negative gap of around 85 points at 14,979.96, has now recovered to 15,038.51 and trimmed down its loss to around 0.18% or 27.59 points, thanks to some strong buying in select front line stocks. The Nifty is down with a loss of 0.4% or 17.90 points at 4483.05. Earlier, after opening at 4522, it had tumbled to a low of 4445.80.
Bank heavyweights HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and State Bank of India have lost 2.85%, 1.3% and 0.8% respectively.
Tata Consultancy Services is down with a sharp loss of 2.25%. Wipro has slipped by 1.65%. Satyam Computer Services and Infosys Technologies, the other IT heavyweights in the Sensex, are down by 0.9% and 0.8% respectively.
ONGC has declined by over 2% to Rs 854. ACC, Ambuja Cements, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Jaiprakash Associates, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, NTPC, Reliance Communications and Reliance Infrastructure are down by 1% - 2%.
Bharti Airtel, Cipla, Grasim Industries, HDFC and Tata Steel also exhibit weakness.
Ranbaxy Laboratories, which had a fairly good session yesterday, has posted a sharp gain of 3.5% this morning. DLF, which opened on a negative note, has rallied smartly and is up with a gain of around 1.5% at present. BHEL has surged nearly a per cent. Hindalco is up with a slender gain. Reliance Industries has moved up by around 0.75%.
Tata Communications, Suzlon Energy, Cairn India, Siemens, HCL Technologies, Power Grid, Idea Cellular, GAIL India, Hero Honda, ABB, Sterlite Industries and Nalco are among the prominent losers in the Nifty index.
Tata Power, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, BPCL, Reliance Petroleum and Sun Pharmaceuticals have also posted sharp gains.
