The market today opens sharply lower on the back of weak cues from the global markets. The selling pressure witnessed across the board in the opening trade. The BSE Sensex came below the 16500 mark and the NSE Nifty slipped below the 4,900 mark in the opening trade. The Mid Cap and Small Cap are also trading in line with the benchmark index.
The overall market breadth is negative as 382 stocks are advancing whereas 1,337 stocks are declining on BSE.
At 10.30AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 263.40 points at 16,386.24 and the Nifty was down by 62.10 points to 4,884.45.
The BSE Mid Cap decreased by 125.27 points to 6,811.84 and the BSE Small Cap slipped by 150.47 points to 8,366.96.
Bharti Airtel reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack. It is trading with a gain of 2.58% at Rs.861.50 while BHEL reported the top loser down by 4.42% at Rs.1,670.
BSE Realty index slipped by 127.01 points to trade at 7,383.13. The major losers are HDIL, Indiabull Real, Parsavnath and Sobha Developers fell by (2.80%), (2.48%), (2.54%) and (1.88%) to Rs.737, Rs.478.30, Rs.207 and Rs.525.90 respectively.
BSE Capital Goods index dropped by 253.69 points to trade at 12,938.73. The top losers are BHEL declined by by (3.95%) to Rs.1,676.20, L&T decreased by (2.09%) at Rs.2,784.50 followed by ABB and Simens down by (1.88%) and (0.80%) to Rs.991.10 and Rs.583.15.
Bharti Airtel is trading higher by (2.58%) at Rs.861.50. The company after almost four months of discussions, finally called off merger talks with South Africa’s MTN over differences about control.
BHEL is trading lower by (3.95%) at Rs.1,676.20. The company has posted a decline of 3.43% in its net profit at Rs11108.70mn for the quarter ended March 31, 2008 as compared to Rs11503.70mn for the quarter ended March 31, 2007. However, for the year ended March, 31 2008, the company has posted an incline in its net profit by 18.41% to Rs 28593.40 mn as compared to Rs24147.00mn for the year ended March 31, 2007.
