Volatility Grips The Market

The market is facing the volatility since the initial bell as Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will come out with its annual credit policy for the fiscal 2008-09 on April 29 and the US Fed has its policy meeting on the April 30. This led the investors to take calculated steps in booking their positions. The market breadth is strong as 1369 stocks are trading in green while 930 stocks are trading in red.

At 11.31AM, BSE Sensex is trading higher by 21.7 points at 17,147.69 and NSE Nifty is trading up by 12.6 points at 5,124.30. The BSE Mid Cap and Small Cap are trading higher by 52.70 points and 53.10 points at 7,108.91 and 8,780.82 respectively.

The Realty index is trading up by 83.30 points at 8,233.07. Pushing it are Anant Raj inds 8.70%, Ansal infra 3.99%, Mahindra Life 2.70%, Penland 2.56%, Akruti City 1.07%, Omaxe 1.02%, DLF 0.94%, Unitech 0.74%, Sobha Dev 0.70% and Parvnath 0.51%.

The Capital Goods index is trading lower by 143.84 points at 13,778.03. Pulling it are Siemens trading down by 10.24% at Rs578.25 in line with Areva by 4.76% at Rs1651.10, ABB by 2.90% at Rs1137 and Alstom Projects by 1.68% at Rs695.

Losers from the BSE are Siemens trading lower by 10.24% at Rs578.25 along with Areva by 3.67% at Rs1669.90, ABB by 3.33% at Rs1132, Cipla by 2.99% at Rs217.60, Essar Oil by 2.83% at Rs272.60, Ashok Leyland by 2.08% at Rs40.10, Wipro by 1.69% at Rs458.30 and Alsto Projects by 1.68% at Rs695.

Sterlite industries is trading up by (2.81%) at Rs859.8 as the company has posted a growth of 15.32% in consolidated net profit to Rs1318.41 crore as against Rs1143.22 crore reported during the same period last year. On a standalone basis, the net profit grew by 46.5% to Rs306.45 crore during the quarter as against Rs209.18 crore last year.

Bharti Airtel is trading higher by (1.9%) at Rs939.9 as the company has reported a growth of 44 in consolidated net profit to Rs1,898.85 crore for the quarter ended March 2008 as compared to Rs1,318.56 crore reported during the corresponding period last year. The yearly net profit grew by 57.4% to Rs6,395.38 crore as against Rs4,062.01 crore last year.

Idea Cellular is trading higher by (2.19%) at Rs109.9 as the company’s net profit grew by 2.11 times to Rs2782 mn as compared to Rs1320.10mn last year. Also the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has allocated 4.4 MHz of GSM spectrum to start operations in Orissa. The company has also launched a new life long recharge voucher for its prepaid subscribers that is priced at Rs195. This allows all local calls at Re1 per minute.
