Trading got off to a buoyant start on the major Indian bourses this morning thanks to a firm trend across the globe. Bank stocks did look a bit subdued in early trade following a hike in CRR, but thanks to firm support at lower levels, they have edged higher in subsequent trade.
Information technology stocks have extended their gains on strong buying interest. Key metal, capital goods, power, realty and oil stocks have also posted sharp gains. A fair amount of buying is seen in pharma and auto sectors as well.
The Sensex, which opened with a positive gap of around 130 points at 16,611.41 and zoomed to 16,778.59, is up with a gain of 263.84 points or 1.6% at 16,745.04 now.
The Nifty, which raced past the coveted 5000 mark and hit a high of 5053.40 is up with a gain of 1.62% or 80.35 points at 5038.75 at present.
IT majors Wipro (4.1%), Infosys Technologies (1.5%), Tata Consultancy Services (2.95%) and Satyam Computer Services (2.6%) have moved up sharply.
Tata Steel, Hindalco, HDFC, Grasim Industries and NTPC are up by 2% - 3%. ACC, Ambuja Cements, Bharti Airtel, Cipla, DLF, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Jaiprakash Associates, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, ONGC, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Reliance Communications and Reliance Energy have gained 1% - 2%.
Reliance Industries is up nearly a per cent at Rs 2661.80. Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, Maruti Suzuki and BHEL have posted modest gains. State Bank of India is up with a slender gain while HDFC Bank is down with a marginal loss.
Nifty stock Suzlon Energy has moved up by over 3% on reports of some big order wins. SAIL has also gained more than 3%. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Nalco, Cairn India, Power Grid, Idea Cellular, Tata Communications, ABB, Siemens, Tata Power, BPCL, Reliance Petroleum, Sterlite Industries, Zee Entertainment and Unitech are among the other prominent gainers in the Nifty index.
Titagarh Wagons has made a fairly strong debut this morning. On the National Stock Exchange, where it opened at Rs 540, its IPO price, and vaulted to Rs 695 in early trade, the stock is presently quoted around Rs 678. Around 9 lakh shares have changed hands at the Titagarh Wagons counter on NSE this morning.
