Trading got off to an upbeat start on the major Indian bourses this morning as the bulls, with strong global markets backing them up, took first strike and lifted stock prices up sharply in early trade. Stocks cutting across sectors have moved up in frenzied buying and mirroring the buoyant mood, the benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty have posted handsome gains now.
While the Sensex, which opened with a positive gap of 323 points at 15,612.61, has rallied to 15,786.95, netting a gain of 497.55 points or 3.25%, the Nifty has flared up by 3.21% or 147.50 points to 4757.35 now.
Reflecting the sharp surge in prices of information technology, realty and bank stocks, the respective sectoral indices BSE IT, Realty and Bankex have moved up by 3.25% - 3.5% now. The Capital Goods, Tech, Metal, Power and Oil & Gas indices have surged 2% - 2.5% while the Auto, Healthcare, FMCG, CD and PSU barometers have advanced by 1.25% - 1.5%.
Though buying remains a bit selective in smallcap space - the Smallcap index is up with a modest gain of 0.84% - several midcap stocks have risen sharply in opening trade. The BSE Midcap index has moved up by as much as 1.7% at present.
Jaiprakash Associates (up 5.8% at Rs 211.85) is the biggest gainer in the Sensex. ICICI Bank and Infosys Technologies have gained 4.55% and 4.35% respectively.
Bharti Airtel, DLF, Reliance Energy, BHEL, HDFC Bank, Hindalco, HDFC, ONGC, Reliance Communications, Reliance Industries, Satyam Computer Services, State Bank of India, Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro have gained 2% - 4%.
Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Larsen & Toubro, ITC, Hindustan Unilever, ACC, Ambuja Cements, Cipla and Grasim Industries have also risen sharply. Mahindra & Mahindra, NTPC and Ranbaxy Laboratories have gained marginal ground.
Cairn India has gained 5.3%. SAIL, Sterlite Industries, HCL Technologies, Tata Communications, Tata Power, Siemens, Unitech, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Punjab National Bank, Zee Entertainment, BPCL, Idea Cellular, ABB and GAIL India are up by 2% - 4.5% now. Hero Honda, Reliance Petroleum, Suzlon Energy, Nalco and Power Grid have also posted sharp gains.
