SEOUL: South Korean shares were sharply higher in early trading Tuesday following Wall Street's overnight rebound, dealers said.
At 0021 GMT, the KOSPI index was up 35.23 points or 2.2 percent at 1,662.42, after declining by 3.85 percent on Monday.
Shares of machinery makers, brokerages and builders were among the key gainers.
The Dow industrials rose 1.5 per cent Monday as dismal new home sales data raised hopes that the Federal Reserve might slash interest rates again to help the world's largest economy cope with the fallout from the subprime crisis.
