MUMBAI: Key indices opened slightly higher after a major sell-off in the previous session, tracking a rebound in select Asian indices. However, the gains were short lived as equities slipped into red soon after.
At 10:05 am, the Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex was up 67 points or 0.35 per cent at 19,328.16.
Biggest Sensex gainers were Bharti Airtel (up 1.69%), NTPC (1.42%), DLF (1.13%), ONGC (0.99%) and Reliance Communications (0.81%).
HDFC Bank (down 2.41%), ICICI Bank (1.47%), Grasim Industries (0.78%), Hindustan Unilever (0.71%) and Hindalco Industries (0.71%) were the losers.
National Stock Exchange’s Nifty was 24 points or 0.42 per cent higher at 5801.35.
Stocks in Asia bounced back from Monday’s lows to trade in positive territory. The Hang Seng was up 0.73 per cent, the Straits Times was flat. But the Nikkei dipped down 0.05 per cent after a firm open.
Concerns over economic growth in the US continued to weigh down investor sentiment in the region. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.29 per cent, the Standards & Poors 500 Index shed 1.5 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite Index slipped by 2.32 per cent.
