KOTTAYAM: Production of natural rubber is likely to go up during October-January, which is the peak production season. Natural rubber production is expected to be 90,000 tonne in October, 1.1 lakh tonne in November and 1.5 lakh tonne in December this year, according to the Rubber Board.
“Natural rubber production may even cross projected figures during the peak season because of favourable climatic conditions prevailing in Kerala. The expected production might not reduce the burden,” said Rubber Board joint director Mohan Chandran. “Currently, production is falling short by 52,000 tonne compared to last year’s,” he said.
Experts and manufacturers say production of natural rubber might slump in 2007-08 despite the strong outlook, leading to increased imports in the coming months.
According to the Rubber Board, imports have gone up 49.9% to 39,080 tonne this year, against 27,530 tonne previously.
Mr Mohan said : “Imports increased because of lower prices of natural rubber in the international market. Prices of technicallyspecified natural rubber (TSNR) were lower than domestic prices, pushing tyre makers to import. TSNR is the main input used in tyre manufacturing and its production has been low in the past few years.”
TSNR production up to June has slipped to 19,280 tonne, against 19,950 last year.
