Earnings drive equities higher in Asia

MUMBAI: Equities in Asian markets were trading higher Friday on higher than expected earnings from Sony Corp and Acer, and Microsoft’s raised profit forecast.

Consumer electronics maker, Sony jumped the most in almost 21 months. BHP Billiton and Cnooc gained as crude oil rose above $91 a barrel after metals prices climbed the most in two weeks.

Honda Motor clocked its biggest rise since Sep 2005 after lifting its full-year profit forecasts, while hard-disk drives maker Hitachi advanced on lower-than-forecast loss.

Japan's Nikkei 225 Average advanced 0.6 per cent to 16,383.88. South Korea's Kospi index climbed 1.4 per cent, while Singapore's Straits Times Index rose 1.1 per cent.
