MTNL to expand broadband capacity in Delhi, Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 01: State-owned telco Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) today said it would clear around 39,000 wait-listed broadband applications within a month by installing additional capacity.

"We have around 2.50-lakh broadband customers while around 39,000 are in the queue," MTNL Chairman and Managing Director R S P Sinha told reporters on the sidelines of company's netfone-spyk-Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services here.

"The waiting list will be wiped out within a month as we will put in place additional capacity to increase it to eight lakh connections in Delhi and Mumbai," he said.

MTNL was also eyeing overseas markets of Kenya, Turkey and Sri Lanka where it was planning to acquire licences to launch telecom operations, Sinha said.

On the bid for Sri Lankan fixed wireless operator Suntel, sinha said the deal would most likely be sealed within the next four weeks.

"We have bid for suntel, but not sure whether we would bag the deal or not," he added.

Reportedly, MTNL has emerged as the highest bidder for colombo-based Suntel, which offers fixed wireless services on CDMA will technology.
